The recent start-up and operation of the Brewery Creek mine has demonstrated that a heap leach facility can be operated successfully in extreme northern climates. The heap, power supply and solution application systems can be designed to incorporate sufficient flexibility and redundancy to allow safe, continuous operation throughout severe winter conditions. The results of the thermal modelling have been substantiated in the field, and indicate a number of likely approaches to optimizing the available ore stacking period.
