Corrosion under insulation has plagued the piping industry for many years. Inspections often require removal of the insulation and are inefficient and expensive. Guided waves offer an efficient screening inspection of piping. Tens of meters can be inspected from one position, while removing only a small section of insulation. Defect detection using guided waves will be demonstrated. Generation and reception of guided waves can be achieved by placing a transducer on a plexiglas shoe or using a multiple element array (comb) transducer. Various mode and frequency combinations can be produced. The multi-mode capability provides flexibility in mode selection for optimizing inspection capabilities. Mode and frequency combinations are chosen to maximize defect sensitivity and penetration power. Sample results from several insulated 4" Schedule 40 steel pipes will be presented.
