Some Kinetic Phenomena at the Surface of Liquid Steel

Collision and agglomeration behavior ofvarious non-metallic inclusions on the surface of steelmelts of different composition has been observed"in-situ" and in real time by confocal scanning lasermicroscopy. Characteristics of the behavior distinct tosolid or liquid inclusions of different systems havebeen established and are described. Strong attractionis found to occur between solid inclusion particles,whereas liquid ones show no such attraction. Thisattraction is responsible for the formation of clustersof solid inclusion particles, and is considered due to capillary effects.Measurements have been made of steady-state carbonconcentrations in iron, iron-sulfur, and iron-seleniummelts under impinging mixtures of CO and H_2O. It isshown that the ratio of the interfacial rate constantsfor the decarburization of iron by CO_2 and H_2O can bededuced from these studies. The ratio is found to beconsistent with the results of direct determinations.
