Hie paper deals with the description of the progress thai was made at tlie Rio summit, particularly the UN's foundation of a Commission for Sustainable Development (CSD). Furthermore the implementation of the Rio Convent ioas and the Rio Declaration are discussed. Finally, the paper points out the challenge facing the international community to formulate a new philosophy of the relationship between society and environment.
