The paper describes specific features of the Lake Baikal Region, in view of its sustainable development, its strategy, first steps made by the Irkutsk region, and large projects of national significance. With the development of political and economic relations between Russia and the European Community, the U.S., Japan and other countries of the Pacific region, the role of the Lake Baikal Region, and particularly of the Irkutsk region as a favorable geographical communication center with a developed economy and transportation network and a considerable potential of mineral and wood resources, will increase objectively. In view of this circumstance, the administration of the region is striving for open international cooperation and expects that this attitude will help ensure the dynamic development of the region. However, desires and declarations alone are not sufficient for realizing such cooperation. Real steps in this direction are necessary. With this in mind, the region has actively begun to prepare conditions for economic interaction to form the appropriate infrastructure.
