Terpyridine and bipyridine-terminated polystyrene was synthesized by direct addition of terpyridine and bipyridine to a solution of polystyryllithium (PS-Li). The degree of functionalization was 77 – 93 %, by NMR end-group analysis and chromatography, a n d s a m p l e s c o u l d b e e n r i c h e d t o n e a r l y q u a n t i t a t i v e functionalization through chromatographic separation. By employing an excess of the pyridyl end-caps, the fraction of chains forming d ouble molecular weight species through addition to the same olypyridyl center was kept to several percent or below. Endu nctionalized samples were prepared with molecular weights anging from 2.1k to 12.5k and polydispersity indices from 1.06 to 13. The a b i l i t y o f t e r p y r i d i n e end-capped chains t o form s upramolecular complexes with iron(II) chloride was established by JV-vis titration .
