Cyanoacrylate-Based Photoreactive Polymers and Their Applications

Cyanoacrylate polymers are commercially important materials asstructural adhesives. They combine rapid curing and high strength andare widely used to bond a diverse range of substrate surfacesincluding, metals, ceramics, plastics and rubbers.~1 More recently theyhave been used in the biomedical area as surgical adhesives fortopological wound closure and as binding agents for the controlleddelivery of drugs.~(2,3)Although the industrial and consumer sector stillaccounts for the major consumption of cyanoacrylates, there has beengrowing interest in the use of these materials in photopolymer andphoto optical applications including photopolymerizable adhesives forbonding plastics, photoresist coatings for high-resolution lithography,optical waveguide sensors for selective detection of organic vapors,holographic recording media and as precursor films that can be readilymodified by exposure to UV light for high-tilt angle alignment of liquidcrystals.~(4-8)
