A quantitative procedure for evaluating the effects of short-term temporary loads on piping systems and supports is described. This includes the reduction of seismic loads and adjustment of the design basis load sets to account for the short duration of the temporary loads. The rationale for the criteria are reviewed along with industry and regulatory agency evaluations. Sample applications are discussed to quantify the benefits of using these methods to reduce pipe loadings for temporary conditions.
