In this paper, numerical solutions of thermal stress analysis of pipe bends in the pipe systems of chemical and power plants are presented using the finite element method. The thin shell theory proposed by Novozihlov is used in this analysis. The finite element models of the elbow are subdivided into curved quadrilateral toroidal shell elements using Hermite interpolation functions. Longitudinal and circumferential stresses in the cross-section are shown for the parameters of opening angles of pipe bends. Also, results of stresses are given for various thicknesses of pipe wall of elbow.
