Rather than discussing formal "training," I would prefer to use the term "learning," because that is the real bottom line. We train so that people will learn. Learning is an important link in the process of extension, but we must remember that it is not an end in itself. It is a link, and what follows should be read with that perspective in mind. I should like to paraphrase a statement by Dr. Borlaug: "We must be able to look over the fence at other disciplines and not look at the world through the needle's eye of our own specialization only." I would like to take these words as a guide for this presentation, which will focus on several needs and challenges, and use a case study to illustrate my observations. Dr. Borlaug's statement offers us a perspective and a goal to keep in mind as we get involved in training and learning programs. We are looking for the sustainability of in-service training through the preparation of trainers by way of formal education with sound technical, pedagogical, and adult education, social science preparation, as well as a role in systematic upgrading.
