A novel automated routine has been developed toquantify the local chemistry and extract valence mapsfrom electron energy loss spectra. This approach, besidesthe usual quantitative maps, has allowed to determine theorigin of the various cations that incorporate to thesurface oxides and their impact in the oxide protectivenature. Two austenitic alloys are compared and thedifferences in their oxides at different regions explained.
