(1139) CREATING CURRICULA FOR CONTEMPORARY CONTEXTS: TOWARDS A REVISED MODEL OF CURRICULUM DESIGN

As teachers and educational developers, we often reach for models to help guide our course designs. There is a multiplicity from which to choose, most of which have been developed over the last forty years to meet specific pedagogic challenges in different learning contexts. However, many of the most commonly used models can broadly fit into one of two overall types: those which focus on content delivery, and those which follow a project planning/instructional design approach. These models offer wisdom, clarity and insight into many instrumental aspects of the educational design process - particularly for the inexperienced designer. However, the question must be asked about the extent to which any of them suits the needs of the contemporary university course and curriculum creation environment.In this paper, we explore an alternative model which is being developed in current higher educational design practice.
