Biochemical investigation effect of Vespa orientalis venom therapy: Rat rheumatoid arthritis model

Background: It's commonly reported that wasp venom contain substance with anti-inflammatory effects, but the impact of internal organs (renal and hepatic) by low and high levels are still obscure. This study designed to assess the potential effects crud wasp venom as apitherapy on rat's organ functions. Methods: Thirty rats which divided into three groups, two groups induced with rheumatoid arthritis and treated with venom with different doses and times. Control group which subdivided into control negative injected with distil water only and positive that injected with complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA). Results: Measurements of right hind paw showed no significant differences as compared with rheumatoid and control groups. liver functions tests indicated significant increase in total bilirubin in dose 10μg/kg after 5 days from CFA injection, dose 10μg/kg only along with CFA injection showed significant increasing in AST and ALT, while creatinine showed significant increasing in both doses 40 and 10μg/kg after 5 days from CFA injection, both doses 40 and 10μg/kg along with CFA injection revealed significant increase in urea in comparison with rheumatoid group, the Urea/Creatinine ratio showed significant increase in both doses 40 and 10μg/kg (along with CFA) as compared with rheumatoid arthritis, while the results of creatine kinase showed significant increase in 40 and 10μg/kg (both along with and after 5 days from CFA injection). Conclusion: The finding of this study revealed a potential effect of wasp venom on organs function depend on time, dose in rheumatoid induction model and from clinical measurement the venom may not sufficient to treat rheumatoid arthritis.
