5G Experimental Trials of 4.5 GHz Band Digital Beamforming in Dense Urban Area

Massive MIMO using beamforming (BF) is a promising technique for fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication system. In low SHF bands such as 3-6 GHz, fully digital Massive MIMO with digital BF can be easily introduced. Although it is expected that earlier 5G commercial services will launch in dense urban areas, 4.5 GHz-band 5G experimental trials have never been performed in such areas. Therefore, this paper presents some results of recent 4.5 GHz-band 5G experimental trials using digital-BF Massive MIMO in the dense urban area. It shows both coverage with single user and system throughput with four-user that are closely located in Tokyo, Japan.
