Which kind of innovation mode is optimal for enterprise: explore how the market and organization resources influence the choice of innovation mode

Recently, researchers have come to a different conclusion about the relationship between the balance of two innovation approaches (exploration and exploitation) and firm growth performance. The operating mechanism about innovation mode is unclear and the limitation of enterprises' resources was seldom considered in research Therefore, the resources constraints of market and organization on innovation mode is taken into account in this paper based on a survey of 322 innovative enterprises in Tianjin. the result shows that firm size can significantly enhances the inverted U-shaped relationship between the balance of two innovation approaches' input and firm growth performance, whereas the market competition can significantly weaken the inverted U-shaped relationship. Finally, by further analyzing the moving regularity of the optimal balance point between two innovation approaches' input varied with the changing of firm size and market competition, in this paper, we drew the conclusion about how to allocate limited resources properly between two innovation approaches for obtaining higher performance in enterprise whose firm size and market competition are different.
