Alternative Dielectric Insulating Fluids as a Replacement for Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCBs) in Transformers

In certain applications mineral oil-filled transformers cannot be used due to concerns over the relatively low flash and fire points of the insulating liquid. The original approach to overcome this problem in the early 1900s was to substitute nonflammable liquids, PCBs, as an alternative insulating fluid in transformers installed in sensitive areas. However, with the eventual ban on the use of PCBs, alternative insulating liquids have been used in its place. This paper will review a brief history of the use of PCBs as well as provide a summary of the alternative liquids used in transformers requiring stricter "less-flammable" type installations. Additionally, new emerging technologies in dielectric liquids will be discussed.
