The aim of this research was to study the sorption of dissolved organic matter (DOM) onto marine microalgae by using humic substances (HS) as a proxy for the behaviour of DOM. Sorption experiments involving HS and Isochrysis galbana or Nannochloropsis oculata were conducted under estuarine conditions. When microalgae and HS were present in brackish waters, a rapid sorption of HS onto phytoplankton cells occurred. The sorption process was complex. It was affected by the physicochemical conditions of the brackish waters which modulate the amount of HS sorbed and the affinity of HS for the microalgae cell surface.
