Replacement Period Evaluation of Petrol Engines Air Filters Based on Restriction Measurement

The dust particles in atmospheric air that are not retained by the air filter enter the internal combustion engine and determine the increase of wear, as well as the worsening of lubrication. The air filter condition influences the energetic and economic performances, as well as the reliability of internal combustion engine. The air filter condition is principally characterized by the value of pressure restriction. The filter replacement period should be set depending on the value of restriction. During operation, this principle is not always applied, as in many situations the filters are replaced prematurely. The current article shows results of restriction measurement for two types of air filters, in different states of clogging, and in several test conditions for the spark ignition engine of the vehicle on chassis dynamometer. Wheel power was also measured. The values measured restriction values indicate that the used filters were replaced prematurely.
