Metro tunnel ventilation concepts evolution following operational advances and evolving rolling stock characteristics

The present paper describes the evolution in the tunnel ventilation systems (TVS) designed and implemented over a period of 30 years in Metro systems in Greece, namely in the cities of Athens and Thessaloniki. Five TVS schemes are presented in concept, highlighting the ever-evolving operational requirements and rolling stock characteristics which in turn lead to changes and upgrading in the tunnel ventilation systems. The main characteristics, performances, advantages, disadvantages, capital and operational costs, systems lifetime, reliability and maintainability issues are compared and discussed for each alternative. Furthermore, power supply and controls architectures and the necessary civil works infrastructure for the various tunnel ventilation systems cases are also presented. The five alternatives are listed from (A) to (E), and they use as reference for all comparisons the Base Project of Lines 2 & 3 which was constructed in the 90's and was put into operation in Jan 2000. All the ventilation schemes presented are implemented in projects either in operation or under construction or under tender.
