These days contracts in the Netherlands and in many other countries are less about specifications, but more and more about functional requirements that have to be met. For every project-phase contractors are expected to meet these functional requirements. Design choices increasingly have to be verified in a qualitative and quantitative way. Practice shows that this is not an easy task for e.g. contractors. Therefore a study has been set up to demonstrate that the requirements are met for the design of the escape route corridor. It is generally accepted that the ventilation installation of an escape route corridor is considered to be a standalone installation and that only a small part of the complete system is considered. Design calculations are made based on general guidelines like AVV (1). This in fact is a very limited view of the real situation.
