By the ships' ballast water are transferred and discharged non-indigenous aquatic organisms into receiving waters. The Black Sea was also involved in such events as source of organisms and as colonized waters, too. In order to avoid this type of water pollution, the International Maritime Organization recommends treating the ballast water by means of different methods. One of them is based on heating the ballast water for killing the organisms and microorganisms. The paper presents a system for recovering the heat from the main engine to raise the temperature of the ballast water and the impact of different stages of heating on the total number of microorganisms. The samples were collected from the Black Sea, analyzed using the epifluorescent microscope and, to estimate the total number of cells, the CellC software was used.
