Surface waves suppression is a critical step in land based seismic data processing. In this paper, we propose a new method of surface waves suppression based on empirical mode decomposition(EMD) in f-x domain. The method can overcome the limitation of regular trace spatial sampling of f-k filtering and also avoid the effective signal loss or incomplete suppression of surface waves due to the inaccurate selection of filtering window. Moreover, we can get a better result of surface waves suppression just to substract the first intrinsic mode function (IMF) obtained by EMD in the offset direction. Therefore, the method can be regarded as an auto-adaptive f-k filter with a frequency-dependent, high-cut wavenumber filtering property. Applying this method to the simulated and field data sets indicates that it can suppress surface waves effectively, meanwhile, maintain the effective signal comparing to f-k filtering method.
