摘要

Foraging is the act of searching for, acquiring, and mechanically processing a source of food. Given the choice between working for food (contrafreeloading) and obtaining freely available food, under most conditions animals will choose to work for food. The act of foraging may represent an inherent behavioral need essential for individual well-being and species survival. Foraging is a fundamental part of the natural history of a species. Unlike dogs and cats, parrots are not domesticated animals. Themajority of pet parrots are captive-bred, hand-raised animals only a few generations away from the wild. Up to 70% of the day in the life of a wild parrot is spent foraging. Recognition and acceptance of natural avian behavior will better prepare veterinary professionals to treat and counsel avian patients and their caretakers. The onus is on veterinary professionals to educate our clients and ensure the optimal well-being of the birds in our care. One method of doing so is through the compilation of beginner "foraging kits" to be made available in the clinic setting. This presentation addresses the behavioral need to forage, its role as an enrichment tool, and novel ways for its incorporation into the lives of captive birds.
