"When crude oil is hydro-processed in a refinery, various off-gas streams containing sulfur compounds like H2S, CS2 and SO2 are resulting by-products. In addition to the sulfur compounds, these gases may also contain CO, CO2, NH3, various hydrocarbons and significant amounts of water. Further, the streams are individually fluctuating depending on operation modes. All in all not an easy task to handle for a sulfur recovery system, ensuring that the gases are cleaned before being released to the atmosphere. Sulfur recovery is traditionally done by the use of the Claus process converting sulfur compounds into elemental sulfur.
