Thrombin is a serine protease enzyme that circulates in blood as an inactive form of zymogen. The conversion of prothrombin to thrombin carried out by factor Xa triggers the last step of coagulation cascade - the common pathway. Regular course of this phase results in forming cross-linked fibrin polymer. Since thrombin is in the middle of blood clotting proeess it is regulated by several activators and inhibitors [1]. The smallest hesitation in coagulant local concentration can cause different, danger physiological states, for instance internal hemorrhage or spontaneously forming thrombus, which is potentiality deadly. Drugs to help with this problem, that prevent non-controlled coagulation process are anticoagulants. Currently most commonly used anticoagulants are: heparin, dermatan sulfate, vitamin K agonists, hirudin and its derivatives, and factor Xa inhibitors. Although they are effective medicines they have several disadvantages like a possibility of causing heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, osteoporosis or dependence on renal function [2].
