Commentary: For alt.chi paper Models of Minds: Reading the Mind Beyond the Brain

The essay's emphasis on using any kind of data to make inferences about mental states is a welcome critical reflection at a time when many brain-based metrics gain ground. The emphasis on the embodied and distributed cognition reminds us that cognition can already be sensed through observable behavior. That said, I am not sure whether this insight alone has potential to spawn new work or whether the phenomenon needs the new term "Models of Mind" (MoM) in addition to the already existing "theory of mind" or "user models". The inference of phenomena such as intentions, interests or cognitive load from any type of data (mouse clicks, eye tracking, hand movements, etc.) has a long history in HCI.
