Introduction.The introduction of synthetic implants in pelvic reconstructive surgery , some 15 years ago, stimulated not only renewed interest in vaginal surgery but also the development of new implants Currently an estimated 100 synthetic mesh devices or kits have been cleared by the FDA for use in surgery for pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI) but only 20% are actively marketed. (1). The premarket clearance of surgical mesh indicated for urogynecologic surgery was based on preclinical bench and animal studies. Studies to establish clinical effectiveness and safety were undertaken later by the clinical community with clinical trials , published studies and systematic reviews.
