Women's Own Perceptions about Occurrence of Unwanted Pregnancy in Age Group 16-25 years in Latvia

BackgroundAlthough the number of abortion in Latvia is decreasing steadily, still abortion rate per 1000 live births in Latvia is the fifth highest among EU countries. 32-35% abortions are performed for women in age group 15-24 years. Lack of regular use of contraception and insufficient knowledge about sexual and reproductive health are the known risk factors for unwanted pregnancy. Nevertheless, not all women facing an unwanted pregnancy report unprotected intercourse or demonstrate understanding of why the unintended had occurred. Thus, in order to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies, it is crucial to understand woman's believes why the unintended pregnancy had occurred.There have been numerous researches about women's perceptions, why the unintended pregnancy had occurred. These perceptions can be explained in frame of attribution theory and self-serving bias.
