This research presents a comparative study of some commercial EMATs configuration (Meander line, Butterfly and Spiral coil). A 2D Finite Element Model was developed to study and compare the density of the Induced Current (IC) and Lorentz Force(LF) generated at the skin depth by individual coil configurations on four grades of commonly used pipe steel materials. The response of these coil configurations to variation of some EMATs parameters such as Static magnetic field, depth of penetration and Lift-off was also investigated to ascertain their viability. The result obtained showed that the BT EMATs coil configuration generates stronger induced current and Lorentz force density and has a better response to lift off when used on the various grade of pipe steel material. Hence for Long range Ultrasonic testing, the Butterfly coil structure is proven to be a better alternative.
