In ultrasonic inspections movements of the probe on the specimen are typically registered using an electrical encoder. Additional hardware requires maintenance and complicates the probe handling during inspection. Recent developments in NDT equipment with phased arrays and powerful computers provide an opportunity to positional encoding that does not require additional hardware. This study investigates the properties of a medical algorithm known as extended field of view in an industrial application. An average accuracy of below 2% has been measured which makes such an algorithm a viable replacement of an encoder in specific applications.
