Estrogen naturally occurs in a woman's body in various forms. Estrone is associated with menopause while estriol is predominant during pregnancy. Studies have indicated a general increase in thrombotic risk with an increase in estrogenic level. Estradiol has been shown to specifically have a considerable negative impact on fibrin network formation and ultrastructure. However the effect of estrone and estriol on fibrin network formation has not been established. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of various concentrations of estrone (E1) and estriol (E3) on the fibrin network.
