Calculations and analysis of practical case studies indicate that systems using CO_2 as a secondary coolant provide energy savings in the range of 15 to 30 percent compared to their glycol, brine counterparts. Those systems are also relatively simple. The development of CO_2 brine systems is rapidly accelerating, with end-users in a number of countries opting for those plants. This paper outlines one of the challenges faced by many contractors - the design differences of CO_2 secondary cooling systems as compared with traditional ammonia installations, or glycol layouts.
