Representatives of the rare-earth metal(III) chloride oxidotungstates(VI) are already known with the larger RE~(~(3+)) cations La - Nd and Sm - Tb These compounds, if bearing luminescence-silent cations such as La~(3+) and Gd~(~(3+)), have proven to be suitable host materials for luminescence applications. The representatives with the smaller rare-earth metals (RE = Y, Dy - Lu) were impossible to synthesize by solid-state reactions, due to the large coordination number of ten for the trivalent cations. Performing the reactions in a piston-cylinder press, however, yielded the desired results, which are presented here.
