Assessment and control of pollutant load from paddy is important to protect water quality of lakes and streams in Korea. National monitoring program on every land use has been involved in the accurate estimation of pollutant load for TMDL development. The guideline of Korean National Institute of Environment Research (NIER) for Unit load estimation suggested using long-term average annual precipitation, representative event mean concentrations (EMCs) of pollutants, and runoff ratio. The guideline also suggested to estimate EMCs for rainfall classes (0~10mm, 10~30mm, 30~50mm, above 50 mm) and rainfall weighting factor, to make representative runoff ratio and EMC of a pollutant. The objective of this study is to evaluate the method suggested by NIER. In this study, a four-year (2009-2012) intensive fi eld monitoring was done to determine unit pollutant load from paddy fi elds. The EMCs for each rainfall class were calculated and the representative EMCs of BOD, COD, TOC, T-N, T-P, SS for paddy fi eld were determined by NIER method considering rainfall weighting factor.
