Assessment and control of pollutant load from paddy is important to protect water qualityof lakes and streams in Korea. National monitoring program on every land use has beeninvolved in the accurate estimation of pollutant load for TMDL development. The guideline of Korean National Institute of Environment Research (NIER) for Unit loadestimation suggested using long-term average annual precipitation, representative eventmean concentrations (EMCs) of pollutants, and runoff ratio. The guideline also suggested toestimate EMCs for rainfall classes (0~10mm, 10~30mm, 30~50mm, above 50 mm) and rainfallweighting factor, to make representative runoff ratio and EMC of a pollutant. The objective ofthis study is to evaluate the method suggested by NIER.In this study, a four-year (2009-2012) intensive fi eld monitoring was done to determine unitpollutant load from paddy fi elds. The EMCs for each rainfall class were calculated and therepresentative EMCs of BOD, COD, TOC, T-N, T-P, SS for paddy fi eld were determined byNIER method considering rainfall weighting factor.
