TRANSFORMATION OF A HAZARDOUS WASTE LANDFILL INTO A COHESIVE NATURAL AREA FOR THE PUBLIC’S BENEFIT

The landfill at Klintholm for disposal of hazardous waste is owned and operated by NORD Group. Due to changes in the regulations for landfills in Denmark and due to change in ownership of the site, NORD Group decided to stop operation in 2008. In the period from 2008 to 2013, negotiations with the relevant authorities resulted in a closure plan for the area. The closure activities on site commenced in spring 2014, and closure of the hazardous waste landfill was completed by June 2015. The closure project has been planned with respect to the declared areas' outstanding natural beauty, transforming the landfill area into a recreational and natural locality, which also maintains the area as a cultural landscape (former disposal area for hazardous waste), and at the same time ensuring protection of the environment in the future. The keyword for the closure project is adding value to the area at Klintholm along with an ongoing monitoring of the impact on the environment to ensure that no additional mitigating measures are required. A monitoring system for groundwater, surface water, the leachate and indirectly the marine recipient verify that the effluent standards are met.The total costs for closure of the hazardous waste landfill at Klintholm was 1.3 million Euro. In addition to the closure costs, a financial security at approximately 13 million Euro has been founded to cover the aftercare expenses in the succeeding 60 years after closure.
