WASTE MANAGEMENT NEEDS AND OPPORTUNITIES IN RIYADH – LESSONS FROM THE KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA

This paper sets the baseline for waste management in Saudi Arabia and more specifically in Riyadh. It looks at current practices, explores the strategic development and stakeholder development phases completed in publishing a new integrated waste management strategy and reflects on the steps that the city must take next to deliver this 30 years strategy, picking up issues of funding, responsibility, enforcement and service design. This should be of interest to cities and nations embarking on their own journey away from open dumpsites to more controlled, managed and governed waste management systems and solutions.
