Since January 2015 the end-of life vehicles directive 2000/53/EC demands stricter quotas. It is now required to fulfil a minimum of 85 % for recycling and re-use (i.e. incineration is not included) and a minimum of 95 % for recycling and recovery (i.e. incineration is included). These targets are quite ambitious and are much higher as for example targets for packaging and packaging waste (e.g. minimum recycling rates of 60 % for glass or paper & board). The present communication reviews the current status of end-of-life vehicle recycling and presents new results for an economic solution for the fiber fraction. Fluff is an alternative to well established binder carriers and shows equal or even better properties.
