This study aims to characterize the leachate and to investigate the effects of presence of compacted clay as base liner, solid waste composition and deposition period. The existing lysimeter test setup constructed in 2008 is used for this study. The solid wastes deposited in the three lysimeter cells in May 2014 were unloaded from the cell in July 2015. The leachate characteristics have been continually monitored. Three types of lysimeter cells are considered: Lysimeter-A with base liner made of compacted clay liner (CCL) having MSW, Lysimeter-B without liner having MSW and Lysimeter-C without liner having biowaste. In the laboratory through standard methods leachate concentrations by the means of pH, alkalinity, turbidity, BOD5, COD, hardness, conductivity, total solids, nitrate, sulphate, total iron and chloride were measured and monitored. Composition and physical parameters (i.e., color, physical condition, odor, moisture content) of decomposed waste collected from different lysimeters vary significantly for the difference of bottom liner system and waste composition. Finally, it can be concluded that lysimeter operational mode, waste composition and the presence of liner have direct effect on leachate quality.
