On 2 July 2014 the European Commission made a proposal for amending several directives on waste. With this so-called circular economy package the Commission intended to create 180,000 new jobs and to make Europe more competitive as scares resources are saved. However, on 15 December 2014 the new European Commission has stepped back from this plan and has withdrawn the circular economy package. In April 2015 the Commission announced to present a new, more ambitious circular economy package late in 2015, to transform Europe into a more competitive resource-efficient economy, addressing a range of economic sectors, including waste. The pause should be used for breath to re-think the proposal and to communicate with the stakeholders. This communication summarizes the key messages of the withdrawn circular economy package showing the main advantages and disadvantages. It is evaluated in which points the new, already announced proposal in this field should be extended and improved.
