摘要

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 2007 defines methane (CH4) as an important greenhouse gas with a global warming potential 25 times greater than carbon dioxide (CO2). Landfill is considered the fourth largest anthropogenic source of CH4 worldwide. It contributes 20 to 70 Tg of CH4 to annual global CH4 emissions. Landfill CH4 emissions require urgent mitigation to lower the total CH4 concentration in the atmosphere. A possible solution is the oxidation of CH4 by bacteria residing in soil, which represents an important terrestrial CH4 sink.
