The anaerobic decomposition of wastes within landfills generates greenhouse gases (e.g. methane and carbon dioxide) and odour gases. Emissions of odour gases from landfills can lead to some environmental and social impacts, such as complaints of population, reduction of life quality and risks to human health, due to the exposition to some toxic compounds. Usually, biogas collection systems and landfill covers (daily and final) are employed as alternatives of emissions control. However, they are not 100% efficient and a portion of gas generated within the landfill can be released to the atmosphere as fugitive emissions. Thus, one promising management strategy to reduce these emissions is the installation of a biocover as part of the final cover system. Microorganisms naturally present in the biocovers can passively oxidize odour compounds.
