PROMOTING WATER USE EFFICIENCY - STREAMLINING REGULATION OF ALTERNATE ON-SITE WATER REUSE IN SAN FRANCISCO

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission is a department of the City and County of San Francisco that provides retail drinking water and wastewater services to San Francisco, wholesale water to 27 customers within three Bay Area counties, and green hydroelectric and solar power to San Francisco's municipal departments. In 2002, the SFPUC launched a $4.6 billion Water System Improvement Program to repair, replace, and seismically upgrade the system's deteriorating pipelines, tunnels, reservoirs, pump stations, storage tanks, and dams. On October 30, 2008, the Commission adopted a goal of developing an additional 10 million gallons per day (mgd) of locally available water resources in lieu of importing drinking water from the SFPUC's surface water supplies derived from local and Tuolumne River watersheds. Currently, this includes active conservation and the development of local groundwater and recycled water sources.
