Aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) wells are dual purpose wells that allow renewable water supplies (potable or non-potable) to be directly injected into an aquifer during periods of low demand, and for stored water to be recovered for customer use during periods of high demand. Typically, an ASR well is operated in a manner that is either too conservative (multiple backwash cycles per day/week leading to lower overall recharge volumes) or too liberal (not enough backwash cycles to prevent well clogging). Implementation of strategic programming, coupled with a sophisticated understanding of ASR well hydraulics, allows owners to maximize efficiency of ASR well operation, thereby maximizing the value of the infrastructure investment.
