With more and more utilities considering membrane technology for greenfields or upgrades to existing facilities, the task of evaluating the various membrane materials, system configurations, operational flexibility and fiber breakage risk have become a strong challenge. Industry experience of applying low pressure membrane technology for drinking water is broaching 10+ years and certain aspects of operation and repair of membrane systems have become, to a certain extent, familiar and accepted. To the credit of the low pressure MF/UF membrane technology pioneers who battled making membrane technology cost effective compared to conventional media filtration, membrane aspects have been standardized around polymeric materials. This unfortunately shortchanges the consideration of potentially superior materials, basic operation principles, configurations, and pilot protocol concepts that may reduce or all together eliminate certain burdens and limitations previously understood for membranes.
