CONSIDERATION FOR THE CO - SITING OF DESALINATION FACILITIES WITH MUNICIPAL AND INDUSTRIAL FACILITIES - A WATEREUSE FOUNDATION STUDY

Section 1: Introduction As populations grow and fresh water supplies continue to be stressed, desalination offers communities a means to improve their access to a drought - proof and sustainable source of water. The proliferation of desalination projects in the last 50 years is attributed to a combination of increasing demand, access to improved technology, and improved economics of water desalination. However, interest in desalination as a viable fresh water supply has continued to be hindered by the high cost, large energy requirements and potential environmental impacts. Co- siting of desalination facilities with municipal and industrial facilities has the potential to address some of the cost, energy and environmental issues that encumber the construction of new desalination facilities.
