Ozonation of reclaimed water has received increasing attention in the past few years as a viable wastewater disinfectant with additional benefits as it relates to the treatment of certain emerging contaminants. The City of Scottsdale (COS or City) Water Campus Advanced Water Treatment Facility (AWT) provides treatment of unregulated compounds of potential concern (CPCs) through microfiltration (MF) and reverse osmosis (RO). prior to groundwater recharge. As part of the expansion of the AWT, additional CPCs removal by oxidation and photolysis were reviewed. An ozone pilot test was undertaken in order to quantify (1) disinfection doses, (2) impacts on N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) formation, (3) reduction of unregulated Compounds of Potential Concern (CPCs), and (4) impact on chlorination practices in the plant.
