ACID MINE DRAINAGE MANAGEMENT IN INDONESIAN MINES

Acid mine drainage (AMD) as one of the important environmental issues in Indonesianmining was just being concerned in the late 1980s. Studies to identify the AMD potentialshave been initially carried out in some mines operated by international companies to meet theinternational standard practice. At the same time trainings on AMD were conductedparticularly for government officials and mine inspectors. To disseminate the efforts andpractices in AMD mitigation as well as to promote the significance of AMD management thefirst Indonesian Acid Mine Drainage Seminar was held in Bandung in 1996. Such event,which was then followed by the second and third seminars in 2004 and 2008 respectively,serves as a communication forum on AMD issues for stakeholders, i.e. government, miningcompanies, researchers and academics. On government side, the AMD issue is not only theconcern of the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources but also the Ministry of theEnvironment. More and more mines realize that proper AMD management during operationalstage is necessary. The development of AMD issues in Indonesian mining sector whichcovers the policy and regulations, practices in some mines, research and development as wellas the challenges are discussed.
