Atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) [1,2] has become a widely used ion source for mass spectrometry, especially for the study of hydrophobic compounds. The technique is based on formation of a spray containing the solvent and analyte, on which UV photons from a discharge lamp are shone. Several lamps are available on the market producing different photon energy; the most widely used being the krypton lamp. Hence, APPI is usually operated at fixed photon energy. To our knowledge, coupling of the APPI with a continuously tuneable photon source has not been performed yet. We report here the first coupling of an APPI source with a VUV beamline at the SOLEIL synchrotron radiation facility, with photon energy continuously tuneable from 5 to 20 eV.
