1) A mass spectrometry-based quantitative proteomics method was established to simultaneously investigate the plasma proteome changes at four different stages of atherosclerosis by using APOE-/- mice. This platform can facilitate the mechanistic studies on atherosclerosis. 2) A panel of proteins (e.g., complement C4B, C5, C8, apolipoprotein AI, AII, B and CI, plasminogen (PLG), etc.) were identified as candidate "signatures" of atherosclerosis. Their expression level, biological functions (e.g. immune modulation and inflammation) and pathways (e.g., complement and coagulation cascades) potentially associate with atherosclerosis.
